On Friday, July 30 , Isla Pilipina, Inc. will host a semi-formal event at North Park Village (5801 N. Pulaski in Chicago) to raise funds and awareness for underprivileged children in the Philippines. Proceeds will benefit ABS-CBN Foundation's Bantay Bata 163.

ABS-CBN is one of the largest television broadcasting stations in the Philippines. Bantay Bata 163( Look After the Children ) is one of three programs supported by ABS-CBN Foundation. Bantay Bata 163 regulates the rescue and rehabilitation of an average of 170 sick and abused children each month. It is a 24/7 hotline which provides telephone counseling and referral of child abuse cases. People in the Philippines simply dial 163 to receive immediate assistance from trained counselors. Bantay Bata 163 also offers free legal and psychological counseling, as well as a Children's Village that provides temporary shelter to abuse survivors.

Isla Pilipina, Inc has been corresponding with, Elisa Cabahug, Executive director of ABS-CBN Foundation, US, to help organize the fundraiser. The US affiliate was organized in California in 1997. Materials and support for the event have been provided by the foundation itself.

Over 3,000 children have been helped in the past three years by Bantay Bata 163. However, many children are turned away due to limited funds. Cabahug states, "We can't help everyone. There are many who need help but we just don't have enough money to support everyone".

This event will be a chance for the Filipino community to help a child's future. I received a list of children who were rescued by Bantay Bata 163. Each sheet listed the case number, the child's first and last name, their age, their illness, and an update on their health. Below are a few of those listed:

* 9y 6m Pneumonia; in need of antibiotics

* 2y 4m Patient will be going to have his chemo today, right now he needs maintenance and laboratory.

* 12y 4m end stage renal disease; prognosis are guarded. plan: for transplant

Some children need simple medication, such as antibiotics to cure their ailments. Living in the United States we sometimes forget the advantages we receive in healthcare. Vaccinations and medications come readily to us. To children in the Philippines, money becomes the obstacle of a child's life. Help children that can't help themselves by attending this event on July 30 th !

The event offers an elegant buffet dinner and live entertainment. Every guest will receive a gift bag with informational pamphlets about Bantay Bata 163 and trinkets from sponsors. The fundraiser will also feature a silent auction and raffle prizes. Tickets are only $25 per person . Tickets can be purchased at Isla Pilipina Restaurant 2501-D W. Lawrence or call 773-517-7065.

Donations as raffle prizes for the event are being requested as a list of participating merchants will be available online at www.islapilipina.com and updated daily as more donate to support this event.
